About the artwork
Painted in Madrid in 1882 during Hidalgo's formative years at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, this work presents a three-quarter rear view of a young Filipino woman draped in a green-striped cloth against a dark background. The composition demonstrates his early command of academic figure painting, particularly in the rendering of skin tone, hair, and the play of light across the back. Works of this type from his Madrid period reflect the academic portrait tradition while drawing on Filipino subject matter.
About the artist
Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo was a Filipino painter and reformist who trained at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. His silver medal at the 1884 Madrid Exposition, alongside Juan Luna's gold for the Spoliarium, marked one of the most significant achievements in 19th-century Philippine art history.
