Painted in 1875, this work depicts a Filipino fisherman standing at the water's edge, holding a net and a woven basket, dressed in the practical working attire of the rural Philippines. The figure is rendered with academic precision against a lush tropical background, placing it within the costumbrista tradition of documenting Philippine social types for a Spanish audience. The original is held in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
About the artist
Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo was a Filipino painter and reformist who trained at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. His silver medal at the 1884 Madrid Exposition, alongside Juan Luna's gold for the Spoliarium, marked one of the most significant achievements in 19th-century Philippine art history.
