About the artwork

Painted in Arles in August 1888, this canvas belongs to van Gogh's celebrated series of sunflower compositions produced to decorate the Yellow House studio he prepared for Paul Gauguin's visit. The composition depicts twelve sunflowers in varying stages of bloom, rendered in intense yellows and ochres against a flat yellow ground. The original is held at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
