Bahia de Manila, 1899 - Atlas de Filipinas by José Algué

About the artwork

Published in 1899 as Plate 25 of the Atlas de Filipinas, this map documents Manila Bay and its surrounding territories with a circular inset plan of the city of Manila at center. The atlas was a collection of 30 maps produced by Filipino draftsmen under the direction of Father José Algué, S.J., Director of the Manila Observatory, and lithographed by A. Hoen & Co. in Baltimore. It was published at the precise moment of transition from Spanish to American colonial administration, making it one of the most historically significant cartographic documents of the Philippine archipelago.

About the artist

Father José Algué, S.J. (1856–1930) was a Spanish Jesuit priest, meteorologist, and director of the Manila Observatory. He oversaw the production of the Atlas de Filipinas, directing a team of Filipino draftsmen in producing one of the most comprehensive cartographic surveys of the Philippines at the turn of the 20th century.
