La Marina by Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo

About the artwork

This coastal scene depicts figures wading at the shoreline beside a small boat, set beneath a vast, luminous sky rendered with loose, atmospheric brushwork. The composition reflects Hidalgo's Impressionist approach to landscape, with light and atmosphere taking precedence over precise detail. Marine subjects of this type represent a quieter but significant strand of his output alongside his large-scale historical and figure paintings.

About the artist

Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo was a Filipino painter and reformist who trained at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. His silver medal at the 1884 Madrid Exposition, alongside Juan Luna's gold for the Spoliarium, marked one of the most significant achievements in 19th-century Philippine art history.
