Indio a Caballo, 1847 by José Honorato Lozano

About the artwork

This plate is taken from Lozano's 1847 series Vistas de las Islas Filipinas y trages de sus habitantes, a costumbrista collection documenting Philippine social types for foreign visitors during the Spanish colonial period. It depicts a well-dressed Filipino man on horseback wearing a top hat and woven poncho, riding past a nipa hut, a composition typical of the series' detailed costume and landscape documentation.
