Woman, 1938 by Mikuláš Galanda

About the artwork

Painted in 1938, the year of Galanda's death, this work depicts a kneeling female figure in warm reds and orange set against a green Slovak landscape with stylized village houses in the background. The composition combines the simplified, bold contour of his mature figure work with his characteristic grounding of the female form in the rural Slovak environment. It is representative of the lyric expressionism that defined his final period.
