City of Manila, Philippine Islands, 1920

About the artwork

Produced in 1920, this map captures Manila during a period of intensive urban development under the American colonial administration. The Burnham Plan of 1905 had proposed a comprehensive restructuring of the city, and this document reflects the built environment shaped by those interventions over the following fifteen years. The map records the street network, administrative districts, and port infrastructure of a city then recognized as among the most developed in Southeast Asia.
