Carte réduite des isles Philippines

About the artwork

This "carte réduite," a standardized format used in French hydrographic documentation, covers the full extent of the Philippine archipelago with attention to coastlines, navigational hazards, and maritime routes relevant to Pacific and South China Sea trade. Such charts were produced to support European naval operations and commercial navigation across Southeast Asia. The French tradition of reduced nautical charts developed under the Direction du Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine from the late 17th century onward.
