Chart of the World on Mercator's Projection, 1897 by Hermann Berghaus

About the artwork

First published in 1863 and revised through numerous editions, this 1897 edition of Berghaus's celebrated world chart was published by Justus Perthes in Gotha and reconstructed by Hermann Habenicht and Bruno Domann. The map documents shipping lanes, ocean currents, railroad routes, telegraph lines, magnetic variation, and polar features across the entire globe, with inset maps in the lower quadrants detailing global steamship routes and polar projections. It remains one of the most informationally dense world maps produced in the 19th century.
